Whatcha Want at the End of a Movie?

Hey mah peeps,


So, I'm checking in today to ask a very important question: what do you want at the end of a movie?

Currently, the screenplay I am writing is 74 pages in and although it will end up being about 110 (meaning I have a ways to go) I do have to consider how I want it to end. Right now I'm caught between two scenarios: the happy ending everyone expects (and feels closure with) or the unexpected ending (which could also mean happiness, just in a different way!).

Let me preface all this with a VERY brief snippet on what this screenplay is about:

Two cousins are living at the beach with their eccentric grandmother for the summer - Callie, a 17-going-on-18 teenager who has spent her summers on the Cape since she was young, and Harper, her twenty-something cousin who was sent to get her life together after having her world flipped upside down by a tragic accident. The summer brings the family closer together as a whole, but also throws some curve-balls their way including first love, depression, and the ultimate question - what happens when the summer ends?

I promise, it's more exciting than that, but that's the best I can give ya without giving my whole script away!

Now the big question is: what kind of ending do you think a viewer would like best (think you!):
a. Both cousins end up happily in love
b. One cousin ends up in love, one cousin ends up content that she'll be OK
c. Something completely unexpected (I've got tricks up my sleeve!)
d. None of the above (give me a suggestion)

A Writer's Process

Although I have always been a dabbler in blogging (see Xanga and Blogspot for my adolescent thoughts), it's been a while - so I've decided to brush the dust off my figurative keyboard and write to the world again.

However, this blog is going to be a little different: although it is a personal blog, it will chronicle my efforts as a screenwriter following everything from my writing process, progress in my scripts, and shopping my work around!

This is a very exciting, big, and unconventional journey, but I can't wait for all of you to take it with me!
